4×4 Vehicles Driving on the Beaches of Hatteras Island

4x4 driving on the Beach Hatteras IslandNow that the hustle and bustle of summer have drawn to a close, we welcome the “shoulder season” here on the Outer Banks. It is the perfect time of year to go four-wheel driving on the beach. Life really does seem more adventuresome while rolling along the sixty-seven miles of Outer Banks beaches that are part of the National Park Service.

Here are our tips for making your drive more pleasurable and safe.
If You Drive Your Own Vehicle, Obtain an Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Permit

The National Park Service began requiring beach-driving permits in 2012. You can obtain the ORV Permit either in person at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Visitor Center or complete the process online at

The in-person ORV Permit process has 5 easy steps:

1. Present your driver’s license and vehicle registration to the National Park Service staff members selling permits.
2. Complete the ORV Permit Application.
3. Watch the 7-minute video to learn best practices for safe and enjoyable beach driving.
4. Pay for your permit: $50 for 10 consecutive days or $120 for an Annual Permit, valid for one year from date of purchase.
5. Place the permit in your vehicle’s glove box and affix the sticker (proof-of-permit) to your vehicle’s windshield.

The online permit process is equally simple:

1. Have your driver’s license and vehicle registration in hand before logging on.
2. Complete the ORV Permit Application.
3. Watch the video on beach driving.
4. Print the permit for your glove box.
5. Print the paper version of your sticker, which is good for 30 days. The actual sticker will be mailed to you.

That’s all there is to it. You’ll be off enjoying the beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore before you know it.
Obtain the Required 4WD Equipment, and Consider the Suggested Equipment
The required equipment to have in your vehicle is a small shovel; a jack and jack support, such as a good quality piece of lumber; and a low- pressure tire gauge. In the event you get stuck in the sand, these 4 items are necessary to get you unstuck and driving again. Park Rangers may assist you, but they are not permitted to pull or tow other vehicles. Refill holes and remove any boards or other aids after being stuck, leaving the beach passable for others.

The suggested equipment to have on hand includes the following:

• Tow strap
• Good, Quality Tire Pressure Gauge
• First aid kit
• Full sized spare tire
• Litter bags or container
• Fire extinguisher
• Flashlight if night driving
Or you can forget all this work and rent one of our vehicles that includes permit and necessities to make your drive as fun as it can be.

Tips for Driving on the Sand

Slow and steady makes for an enjoyable drive along the coastline. Be alert for people lying down, standing or walking on the beach. Pedestrians always have the right of way.  Please be especially cautious of children and pets who may dart into traffic and watch for fishing lines.

To provide for both visitor enjoyment and the protection of park resources, please observe the following regulations and recommendations when using ORVs on the beaches of Hatteras Island:

• Observe common courtesy on the beach and the rules of the road when meeting or passing other vehicles at constricted areas.
• Lower the pressure on all tires. The softer the sand the lower the pressure needed. Generally, drive with 20-25 lbs. a pressure in the tires. When you return to paved roads, inflate the tires to normal as soon as possible.
• Speed limited on park beaches is 15 mph, unless otherwise posted.
• Enter and leave beach ONLY at designated numbered ramps. The most popular access ramps will open at 6:30 a.m. in September. There are 19 ramps along Route 12 to access the beach on Hatteras Island. Popular but flood-prone ramps 44 and 49 near Cape Point are monitored and sand is added when needed.
• Night Driving: Some portions of designated ORV routes may reopen for night driving on September 15 if there are no turtle nests in the area.  Night driving is allowed from November 16 to April 30.
• Avoid getting too close to the water. Before driving through any water, determine the depth and firmness of the underlying surface.

Four-wheel driving has been enjoyed for many generations along the beaches of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. To preserve the beauty that the unspoiled beaches of Hatteras Island provide, we must all do our part in driving safely, avoid damaging vegetation and eliminating litter to ensure its enjoyment for future generations.

What are you waiting for? Rent a 4×4  vehicle now and enjoy driving on the beach like a pro.
